Let your child explore different types of toothbrushes during play.
Let them dip different toothbrushes into water and imitate brushing on themselves or on dolls/toys.
Experiment with different tooth paste tastes - there are plenty of kids versions with appealing first-time flavors.
Practice "rinsing" with a small cup at the sink. This can also be practiced outside to work on oral-motor control skills in a more playful manner and separate from the full task of toothbrushing. The more fun associated with the task, the more successful the child may be!
Use a mirror.
Place the child on a step-stool if needed to see themselves, or have them sit comfortably at a table with a mirror.
Use lukewarm water, which is usually comfortable for most kids.
Sensory experience: warm water = calming while cold water = alerting!
Explore the differences between warmer and colder water temperatures for a fun, exploratory sensory experience with your child.
Model for them - brush your teeth alongside your child so they can be exposed to the task and see your actions and behaviors.
Follow up with admiring those "clean teeth" with big smiles and funny faces in the mirror!
Have fun! Add music or sing songs. This can give kids a sense of time for the task.
