One of my favorite OT frameworks is the framework of Doing-Being- Becoming, developed by occupational therapist Ann Wilcock. This philosophy of how we are shaped by our engagement in occupation (life activities) as humans in different stages resonates deeply with me.
From the viewpoint that we are constantly evolving in our identities, authentic selves, values, and purpose, this framework really captures the complexity of lifespan development for humans. It is deeply inspiring to me when working with children and families.
Additionally, in reflecting upon ourselves using this framework, we have the capacity to understand and formulate deeper relationships with our clients to help them maximize healthy participation in their life journeys, as we are able to connect with them through the process of “doing, being, and becoming” (Wilcock, 1998).
This philosophy has positively influenced me in my personal life as well as an OT practitioner! If you’re a therapist looking for some inspiration or perhaps a fresh outlook these days, consider this framework.
